John Field is best known as the "father of the nocturne." Whether or not he really did write the first Nocturnes, he wrote some beautiful music and was a highly regarded musician influencing many major composers including Chopin, Brahms, Schumann, and Liszt.
This is fine Romanticism piano in which you can hear the Classical Era influence looking forward to the future and easily see how it influenced the creation of the more familiar piano works by other composers. The patterned and sonorous LH with the emotional and very melodic RH singing above. There is a lot of room for expression.
Field was born in Dublin in 1782--an Irish composer for our March feature! There is a lot of music in this recording. Let it play for awhile and enjoy these beautiful Nocturnes.
