Leaning on the Everlasting Arms |
One day successful author, business man, and
devout Presbyterian layman Anthony J. Showalter received
sorrowful letters from two different friends. In sending
messages of comfort to them, Mr. Showalter included Deuteronomy
33:27. As he concluded his letters he started thinking that this
verse would make a great theme for a hymn. He wrote down the
words and music for a refrain and asked his friend Elisha
Hoffman, a pastor and author of more than 2000 gospel songs to
furnish the stanzas. Read the words of these stanzas.
Leaning leaning
Safe and secure from all alarms
Leaning leaning
Leaning on the everlasting arms
Verse 1
What a fellowship what a joy divine
Leaning on the everlasting arms
What a blessedness what a peace is mine
Leaning on the everlasting arms
Verse 2
Oh how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way
Leaning on the everlasting arms
Oh how bright the path
Grows from day to day
Leaning on the everlasting arms
Verse 3
What have I to dread what have I to fear
Leaning on the everlasting arms
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near
Leaning on the
everlasting arms
Adults lean on things. Children lean on
things. Even animals sometimes lean on things. Why do we lean?
Because leaning gives us some relief--lets us relax, perhaps
takes away some strain. We lean when we need support. We lean
when we need rest. We lean when we need comfort. Think about
this: A lean is the first step of getting into a hug.
What do you lean on? We like to be
independently strong, but eventually we all need to lean on
something. What will you lean on when the need comes? Will it be
on the things you create? Your home? Your finances? Your job?
How about your relationships? Your spouse? Your family? Your
friends?
As the songwriter wrote, we need
to lean on God’s everlasting arms. Take time right now to
ask God to teach you how to "lean on Him" and trust Him for
taking care of you through good times and bad.
